I must say now, that I don't know why I waited so long!<br />
Of course I was scared to death that I would ruin it in the quilting process. I also didn't quite know how I was going to quilt it. I figured I would get a few more quilts under my belt before I would tackle it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyanSGOz6pOFxzkngyOrKUcsw_ciOhPaDddmThvsqIj-ajUIQ0ntfgcQ5xVtq90ap69i1zSj-6CLNOL5ZoE-33EAt9OtauMscDSD7N0Tls6Sqp0WbbXiVdg4Bbswp9WimOA7u3ppaC6NJP/s1600/quilt+projects+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyanSGOz6pOFxzkngyOrKUcsw_ciOhPaDddmThvsqIj-ajUIQ0ntfgcQ5xVtq90ap69i1zSj-6CLNOL5ZoE-33EAt9OtauMscDSD7N0Tls6Sqp0WbbXiVdg4Bbswp9WimOA7u3ppaC6NJP/s320/quilt+projects+004.JPG" /></a></div>I ended up straight line quilting the sashing both ways and doing a tight stipple on all of the white areas of the quilt. The pinwheels just pop now. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpNlRrAoC68pCuRImxPglnskDr5t5RFMP-d4l_0jB-4iy9riLqk9D4OosR_vRSdI6SAUw2nL4lrFJwQj0ekdpUFw5lk2pPIMoFxKe0txUt7vB8-67NREthjZJkN2LzS8Ka5_WnLBUDOz0u/s1600/quilt+projects+013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpNlRrAoC68pCuRImxPglnskDr5t5RFMP-d4l_0jB-4iy9riLqk9D4OosR_vRSdI6SAUw2nL4lrFJwQj0ekdpUFw5lk2pPIMoFxKe0txUt7vB8-67NREthjZJkN2LzS8Ka5_WnLBUDOz0u/s320/quilt+projects+013.JPG" /></a></div>I cannot believe how much thread I used though! I think I went through 20 bobbins of thread and two very large spools of gutterman cotton thread. I don't think this one is going to fall apart any time soon!<br />
A huge hug to <a href="http://jenniferpaganelli.typepad.com/">Jennifer</a> and <a href="http://scientificseamstress.blogspot.com/">Carla</a> for handpicking the backing and the binding for me! I love it! I really need to take a photo of the back!<br />
<br />
What else have I been up to?<br />
I joined the <a href="http://www.freckledwhimsy.com/search/label/Charm%20Pack%20Quilt%20Along">Freckled Whimsy</a> quilt a long and completed this quilt. It is made from the new Moda Bliss line and Kona cotton in Honeydew.<br />

We each made one block and then I assembled and quilted it. She hung it immediately over her bed. I think she liked it!<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I really liked the yellow.... Leighanna liked the pink....Mom liked white. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My original plan was to use the stone sashing, so I went with my gut feeling and I am so glad that I did.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The blocks really are the show. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">All that hard work piecing...some seam ripping...scrapping blocks that didn't quite turn out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I really love it!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Leighanna was very involved in this whole process. She helped me pick out the fabrics for some of the blocks and while I was sewing it all together, she was my pin puller. She wanted to sew a few seams, but I vetoed that idea! I really wanted to take my time and do it right!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">All that is left to do is figure out a backing. I think I might piece a few pinwheels in there too. Perhaps a few of the mishaps that didn't make the front? We'll see. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The quilting of this is going to be tough. I will have to ponder what to do. Stipple, straight line? I don't know yet, perhaps the quilt will tell me when the time comes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A big and hearty THANK YOU to my friends <a href="http://scientificseamstress.blogspot.com/">Carla</a> and <a href="http://joyofcreating.blogspot.com/">Shannon</a>! I loved AND used the scraps of SisBoom fabric that you so graciously gave me, without your kindness, this quilt would not have been!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

It has been really fun! We are almost to the end and being the impatient guy that I am, had to do a couple of computer mock ups of what this will look like!<br />
Now my only problem is..... what color sashing?<br />
<br />

I know, crazy right?!<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The first one I have started is Rachel's from <a href="http://www.psiquilt.com/">p.s. i quilt</a>.<br />I am going to use <a href="http://sisboom.com/category_22/Fabric-Designs.htm">SisBoom</a> fabrics with this one! Check out <a href="http://jenniferpaganelli.typepad.com/">Jenifer's blog</a>, her fabrics are amazing!<br /><br /><br />Here are the first pinwheel blocks.<br /><br /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442606321576536866" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ2Ejt3_hxoTpRMfe7YC2nXXa2ECn1Nk7pmRo6iOdXwkH_IQxVY7bNR9-WhhTZk79itlKgNv-FYw3KR2bOGj5acAKceRLpjdiOpCEQV16nAImiHvZILtBXUNrWAO7Djw875y8tzoK6vX1W/s320/PSIQuilt+along+blocks+004.JPG" border="0" /><br /><br />I also made matching little ones to use in the sashing. Rachel's inspiration quilt used them, and I love the way it looks.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The second one is from the <a href="http://twiddletails.blogspot.com/">twiddletails blog</a>. The use of black and bright colors is what really drew me to this quilt along. I have several brights in my stash, so I thought this would be a great way for me to use some of it.<br /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442607008488202578" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 258px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZN8Dp9wO1zcYV13KHhuXqwOdzaX3nEw7qyZubYBqk3JOiJl5JaOlneMdz_6iuUxpR0iqYjkhbAniAeUaksHMNQEHuUtH0htP9g0XkKlMBz7UwV8AHBdwcgpdbstQICEsUqUgDxM9JjW-y/s320/twiddletails+quilt+along.jpg" border="0" /><br /><br /><br /><br />Since I have started quilting, I have visited several quilters blogs and have been really inspired! The piecing techniques, the quilting, the fabric combinations, all of it!<br />I might become a crazy quilt guy after all! :)<br /><br />On a side note, I will try to update my blog more frequently with my blocks, quilts, and other things that I have been up to! She is such an animal lover. I wasn't too keen on the idea, and this cat would come and go as it pleased. </div><br /><br /><div>A couple of months ago, we noticed that she was staying around more, and had the not so pleasant feeling that she might have gotten with another cat.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Fast forward to yesterday.</div><br /><br /><br /><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334206360312781906" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXd8GboBxv8dSL5IB173p-JLCm7HjSQpHpOy5kDXBEAWgCwKQPlbHNuPA4zykVnpAlBXdaFvwk7h0b13v6XQ4Ix2c5_kbOgGWV8dEcT2MW_lSLmncsOjq_VIRbfgn1orwiZv3q5TOadmC8/s320/fluffy+002.JPG" border="0" /></div></div><br /><div><br /><br /><br /></div><br /><p>Yes, "Fluffy" had kittens! Happy Mother's Day Fluffy. She kept having them, and having them!</p><br /><div><br /><br /><br /></div><br /><p>Leighanna got to witness the birth, and was excited and grossed out at the same time. </p><p>Of course I was too! When all was said and done, she had eight kittens. </p><p>I affectionately call her OctoMom. :) </p><p>Seven are all white, with a little spot here and there, and then there was this one "Oddball". You can't miss him in all the sea of white fluffiness! </p><p>All kittens are thriving at this point. </p><p>There is one little runt of the litter, and we have been helping it find its mother, so it is still thriving too. </p><p>Anyone want a kitty? </p><p>LOL! I am sure that Leighanna will have a hard time letting them go, but I said from the get go, that we will care for them until they are weaned, and then they must go!</p><br /><div> </div><br /><p>I <em>hope </em>to stand <strong>firm</strong> on that decision!</p><br /><div><br /><br /><br /></div><br /><p>Also, on my last post the winner of my blog giveaway was announced. I made Angie a bag to match <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Leighanna's</span> Easter dress. She hasn't seen it yet, so I might fill it up with Easter goodies and use it as a basket.</div><div>I used the <a href="https://www.youcanmakethis.com/info/handbags/SimpleChicHandbag.htm">Simple and Chic </a>pattern from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">YCMT</span>. Although, I would call this one a little Shabby and Chic ;) </div><div>I took the basic pattern and make a few adjustments. I made the exterior flap a little wider, the original one just seemed a little too skimpy. I also made the handles 1/2 inch wider. The skinnier straps I figured would not be sturdy enough.</div><div>I machine quilted the whole exterior of the bag. I like to do this because it seems to make the bag stronger and last longer. I also added an interior zippered pocket. Angie says that a girl has to have some secrets in her bag!</div><div><br /></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323501977145768178" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 241px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinZkUSNtKXDAwDMwhwO_T-H1Nf8jwoq9RJl97CH_nn6Bs23KmbUUW0uEuc4yFLDETuykUmOwrArXDNkrh09Uas9SSHyl6Pjipt4cI9k2GGMVBRGJemX9hmRh9fRoYvB6recH6dEPQx7QFM/s320/simple+and+chic+handbag+008.JPG" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323502064961129922" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 241px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXPaH1KGf5vWRk5TeBtTE21iwmqMB7ydG5kINnNnKYkvluc009p8HjFWxdfGSl9d6jwCUTqruZOBK30G-GXJdBhgVT8Emze1rIOKLJsA0VFJo7xAe6obER2b0CtZsc4SDChq_4ABDy359L/s320/simple+and+chic+handbag+009.JPG" border="0" /> Anyway, the "girls" will look cute in their matching Easter attire. She still had no appetite, but knew that this was the day to go to Grandma and Papa's house to have Christmas.<br /></div><br /><br /><div>She got sick in the car on the way to their house and then proceeded to get sick again once we arrived.</div><br /><br /><br /><div>My sister-in-law is a nurse and she could tell that Leighanna was becoming dehydrated. We tried to force the liquids in her, but they would come right back up. She was also getting diarrhea.<br /></div><br /><br /><div>We left early, and decided on our way home to see if our local Urgent Care was open. Well since it was Saturday night, they weren't. We headed to the ER.</div><br /><br /><br /><div>Once there, it was apparent that she was still sick. The doctors ran a few tests and checked her urine. They ordered a CT scan which showed a slightly inflamed appendix.</div><br /><br /><br /><div>Getting an IV into her proved to be very tricky. After several failed attempts and lots of screaming a retired nurse from Children's hospital came in and got one in.</div><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282675298114814530" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeWp0O_7RFWNDa00b6sjxFG2JdEAvEFtDbetd7ioi-SME75hEAdzbKQG_0_lU6MW08IGjVjXh0nFAPSe-5mf-d5T0el-fx8n6p8X6ezrshOrHga7tnmbID2pbZebjQK9JYTCnjPBNkNWBi/s320/Childrens+hospital+visit+011.JPG" border="0" /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>I have never seen so many nurses leave a room in tears before. (They have come to expect it from us!)</span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Most of the time they say it is too pretty to open. We have always wrapped up our gifts that we give others a little bit special. Call it OCD, but I figure presentation is important too.</span><br /><br /><div align="center">Lovely box isn't it?</div><div align="center">Stay tuned it will be!</div><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjckGbNszx3WpZ3lAkgwXzWzeBFu3F128lAnza4IJLVNAr8ImCSk_UwCQIwd2k7nmzeXtOtdXaIZ7P8H5WeGo5ocvkihJQY2L9FUpBgni2qmfupLFbWP1XDJdiFS1tDPjsY-A4PgnIIuCoR/s1600-h/BOW+MAKING+002.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275594596770423570" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjckGbNszx3WpZ3lAkgwXzWzeBFu3F128lAnza4IJLVNAr8ImCSk_UwCQIwd2k7nmzeXtOtdXaIZ7P8H5WeGo5ocvkihJQY2L9FUpBgni2qmfupLFbWP1XDJdiFS1tDPjsY-A4PgnIIuCoR/s320/BOW+MAKING+002.JPG" border="0" /></a> Start by wrapping your box. I try to be as neat as I can on this. I even use a glue stick</div><div align="center">to conceal the seam on the bottom. I don't like the way the tape looks. Again, OCD. I don't like the bows that you buy in the plastic bag, that have an adhesive strip on them. They never stick and always fall off. They also don't look that nice. The ribbon that I use I get from a craft wholesaler. I got this whole spool of ribbon for $3.00. The crafting has begun!The Christmas gifts are beginning! I spent the morning paper piecing these blocks together.<br /><br /><br />I was going to make the <a href="https://www.youcanmakethis.com/info/free/FREE-Holiday-Door-Hanger.htm">holiday door hanger </a>from YCMT, but all that embroidery didn't appeal to me at all. I am the kind of guy that likes to 'git 'er done! So with a few hours of free time this morning, I finished these lovely blocks. Leighanna helped me pick out the colors for these. I am hoping that everyone that receives them will like them!<br /><br /><br /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273123969563551730" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 311px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 248px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpJo2ETTtNmeft8G3GEtxrLnVU5La2aBLmQ27WitnKjtfFl106dwXa22Pjp5XCoa4EdX0jqiBsY88EO1VibTgMRMwPWuRFvpklZgBPgpRUuSmIUKy-tCzLo7At0DN6hjdqF5sd7O6HioCf/s320/thrifty+fifty+004.JPG" border="0" /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFVlR_Orffv7BxryrSe6t56XHjmKKGdfEwGaHbjCDGUd6Yvi8wrLfcJneIFfenc53Aro6KJY9xQVziQtzb_h0A9ZeCX7dnFu2lgx1H3q76Ah3flizsG0V3BfqYn3WtciqVjrumikaVsi8W/s1600-h/thrifty+fifty+008.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273124083869602002" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 299px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFVlR_Orffv7BxryrSe6t56XHjmKKGdfEwGaHbjCDGUd6Yvi8wrLfcJneIFfenc53Aro6KJY9xQVziQtzb_h0A9ZeCX7dnFu2lgx1H3q76Ah3flizsG0V3BfqYn3WtciqVjrumikaVsi8W/s320/thrifty+fifty+008.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4DgGcqhLpdsQzcz8d3sjO_XvcSpGIOCNul1KdWkBYRKhGK_VUxVkDSXdH0Okz8Bh4z_YtvxBi9lI7xyvXRgK23S-OWhLgn0d9kAK_D5fe6bO7wLktWj8b5C2uBS9AnMpfBe19OYvbCAEJ/s1600-h/thrifty+fifty+007.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273123976216511890" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 295px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4DgGcqhLpdsQzcz8d3sjO_XvcSpGIOCNul1KdWkBYRKhGK_VUxVkDSXdH0Okz8Bh4z_YtvxBi9lI7xyvXRgK23S-OWhLgn0d9kAK_D5fe6bO7wLktWj8b5C2uBS9AnMpfBe19OYvbCAEJ/s320/thrifty+fifty+007.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273130391879120578" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 296px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPZyliyWOLd6ss1rfL85QFlMOIBqdSWHkAwtrshQnj6llz9XF6jd11KokGXTe5OkvnjypJ067WLlBTmaCN7zTXTkjdNkZNf4WvREcUgGZgrZdkNw165hM7JRb_Evn_-cpeCWpmnuqi5WAS/s320/thrifty+fifty+005.JPG" border="0" /><br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbhMbO51oI6-2dLFO8xCylaqpS5NCEaL3PmkCMJzmpU4SXCIAXDetH0MvdbDMHn0KGSO-FzDGwsJi3-ZsxDZZiBIIz53ktn_uoZF_3-ptqEAuhr61diy7jsFiBtGBwGSWm4XXQ6vXIMX2G/s1600-h/thrifty+fifty+006.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273123970105692482" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 283px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbhMbO51oI6-2dLFO8xCylaqpS5NCEaL3PmkCMJzmpU4SXCIAXDetH0MvdbDMHn0KGSO-FzDGwsJi3-ZsxDZZiBIIz53ktn_uoZF_3-ptqEAuhr61diy7jsFiBtGBwGSWm4XXQ6vXIMX2G/s320/thrifty+fifty+006.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /></div><br /><div align="center"><br /><br />Here is a completed one. Mostly corduroy, fleece, and chenile.<br />All of my short cuts of 1/2 yard or less, still are waiting for me to fold them, but for now, I am happy!<br />My wife used to sew alot.<br />When she had a project to do, she would look at the pattern, see how much fabric it took, and go to the fabric store to get it. If a project took 7/8 of a yard, then that is what she got!<br /><br />Ummmmm, when I go to the fabric store, needing only a 1/2 yard of fabric, I come out with much more.<br />Wonder why?.....<br /><br />Let's see....<br /><br /><br /><strong>First</strong>, I have to muster up enough courage to walk in by myself.<br /><br /><br /><strong>Second</strong>, I have to endure the stares of the "Cranky Quilt Ladies" who happen to be cutting fabric today.<br /><br /><br /><strong>Third</strong>, I have to search endlessly for the perfect shade of "<span style="color:#ff99ff;">pink</span>" that my Picky Princess wants.<br /><br /><br />So, to sum it all up.<br /><br />Man walks in fabric store with list (I only need a half a yard of fabric)....<br /><br />Ladies look at him as if to say, "Hey, the sports store is two doors down!"...<br /><br />Finds the perfect "<span style="color:#ff99ff;">pink</span>" to match... along with a couple of more options in case my idea of "perfect" doesn't pan out...<br /><br />Walks up to cutting counter....gets number (Lord, I forgot that important step once.... NEVER AGAIN!)....<br /><br />Lays the fabric down on the counter...<br />Cranky Quilt Lady asks how much do you need?....<br />I shamelessly blurt out 3 yards of each please!<br /><br />Uhmmmm...... What just happened here? I only needed 1/2 yard of each!<br /><br />I feel so like Ralphie telling Santa he only wanted a football for Christmas, when what he really wanted was "An official Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time" Only I can't climb back up the slide and and tell Miss Cranky what I really only needed.<br /><br />So... relutantly I pay the bill.... Go home and hide the stuff so that my "only buy what you need" wife doesn't see it.<br /><br />Well... now it is all out in the open... my very own mini fabric store. AHHHHH!<br /><br />If I only need a half a yard, I will cut it!<br />I don't have to deal with the Cranky Quilters looking at me over their little half reading glasses.<br /><br />This should stay like this for a little while.....<br />Until I hit the fabric stores again, looking for the perfect shade of "<strong><span style="color:#66ffff;">aqua</span><span style="color:#000000;">".</span></strong><br /><strong>Must remember these words.... "Only a half a yard please!"</strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><br /><br />Has this ever happened to you? If it has leave me a comment, I would love to know if it is only a "guy thing"!Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10786995584984373737noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8500611717344607684.post-43384217663370411252008-11-23T02:20:00.002-05:002008-11-23T02:22:36.638-05:00It's freezing here!<span style="color:#333333;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Well since the weather has been so cold, I decided to add a little snow to my blog for a little while.
